With an accident, comes an idea
Soonma would have never seen the light of day without a small accident. Paul's main transportation method when roaming through Montreal was his bike. After a severe knee injury, he had to switch his bike for crutches. Montreal public transport being poorly adapted to his new condition, he started looking for alternatives. He then discovered a small electric scooter which gave him back his freedom and changed his daily life. This type of vehicle was very expensive back then, so he decided to develop the soon one in order to make the vehicle accessible to all.
In the spring of 2019, Canada officially declared a state of climate emergency. A few weeks later, a global climate strike takes to the streets and hundreds of thousands of activists march in the streets of Montreal. Faced with a state of general inaction, the Soonma team decides to act and look for solutions. A first partnership with Trees Canada is established. Soonma commits to planting a tree for every soon one sold and implements carbon neutral distribution in Montreal to limit its carbon impact.
A desire to do more
Greenhouse gas emissions have reached historic highs and the UN is making GHG reduction the priority of the century. We have officially entered a race against time to reverse this trend. The transport sector is singled out with more than 40% of emissions, it is now more than ever primordial to find alternatives. The growing availability of electric vehicles seems to be one of the solution, but we are facing many challenges such as battery recycling. For this reason, Soonma is participating in a pilot project which would enable the recycling of 95% of the components of its batteries. Our goal is to participate in the growth of circular economy to optimize our resources.
A common project
Soonma wants to offer innovating alternatives for their community. Currently working on creating a community mechanical workshop to facilitate the maintenance of the products and place sharing at the heart of the project. The current health and sanitary situation does not favor the opening of the workshop, but luckily, Soonma can count on social economy entreprises like CycloChrome for the maintenance of the products all around the city.
The story of Soonma starts with Paul, Paul and Pauline, three friends from HEC Montreal who shared a vision: creating a better world. In this world, the vehicles are silent, clean, accessible to all, the air is pure and transportation is a pleasure.
Soonma is finally born with this vision on May 7th 2019!
